Exorcise the Demons is an exercise in teamwork where each person must use different information to work together. One player can see the screen and carry out the actions that are needed to complete a demon-banishing ritual, while the other must relay instructions from a book. If you’ve ever tried to explain how to carry out a complex task to someone over the phone, you might have an idea how well this sort of thing goes. Except now, you’re banishing an evil spirit instead of fixing your parents’ router.
This sort of communication loans itself well to making for some surprisingly challenging play, as you struggle to blurt out needed instructions as sinister forces gather around your exorcist. The results can be delightfully tense, but also create many ridiculous moments as well. Things can get quite funny despite the demonic presences that mean to reduce your sanity to ash. Well, maybe for the person with the book, that is.
Don’t expect the rituals to get much easier with practice, as the game randomizes the ritual needs, forcing you to reference multiple things in the book to get by. Your friendship might become strained as you try to get through twenty-five stages of progressively more dangerous hauntings, but at least you can all have a good laugh about it later when your friend gets possessed by the ancient, decaying spirit of human offal.
