Datuk Seri Najib Razak received a wave of boos at the national-level Labour Day celebration at the Borneo Convention Centre in Kuching, Sarawak today after saying that the goods and services tax (GST) was not designed to burden the people.

The noise came from some of the workers who were at the back of the hall. They were believed to be unhappy over Putrajaya's introduction of the 6% consumption tax.

Earlier, the prime minister said that the government could consider using some of the revenue from GST to increase the salaries of the public sector.

Continuing with his address, Najib said that the burden currently experienced by the people was due to profiteering activities.

He called on the relevant authorities to come down hard on the profiteers and unscrupulous traders who manipulated the GST for their own extra financial gains ~ The Malaysian Insider

Bukan saja The Malaysian Insider malah Free Malaysia Today juga melaporkan perkara yang sama..

KUCHING: Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak was roundly booed by a 5,000-strong crowd in the Sarawak capital when he mentioned GST during the national-level Labour Day celebration.

The trigger-off point came when he claimed that “the newly-introduced consumption tax was not aimed at burdening the people”.

“Some of the GST collection would be used to increase salaries in the public sector,” said Najib in an obvious reference to some 800,000 civil servants reportedly drawing less than the RM 900 minimum wage rate in the peninsula.

“I have noted Cuepacs request for an increment of 35 per cent for the lower income group.”

The loudest boos came from the people at the back in the Borneo Convention Centre.

It was clear from the reaction of the crowd at the venue that their suspicion was that the daily RM42 million GST collection would be used to pay off 1MDB’s RM42 billion debt within the next three years.

There’s also speculation that the unpopular tax would be scrapped before the 14th General Election in 2018.

Sarawak Chief Minister Adenan Satem, in contrast, received loud applause when Najib noted that “in a bid to reduce the people’s burden”, the former had “decided to abolish toll along two bridges and reduce electricity tariffs for commercial and industrial consumers”.

Najib attributed the GST burden being experienced by the people to “profiteering activities by businessmen and not due to the 6 per cent tax itself”. He urged the relevant authorities to come down hard on such activities.

There was no reaction when he disclosed, without getting into details, that he would launch a National Unemployment Benefit Scheme.

The scheme, to provide financial security for workers who had lost their jobs, will benefit affected workers for up to six months, Najib added.

Nasiblah kan.. Muhyiddin malu di Permatang Pauh.. Najib pulak di Sarawak..
