The market for survival-horror games is saturated with exploration-based entries that attempt to scare the player through the use of jump-scares. As we have seen in the past, a game that manages to make use of tense and dark atmosphere and audio design can definitely create a much more terrifying experience than games that just choose to direct their attention to jump scares alone. The Tower takes a more atmospheric approach, attempting to create a gritty and realistic horror experience.

The Tower is a game that is grounded in historical realism, and is based on true events. The game takes place in England during the 11th century, and places you into the shoes of Elliot, a man who has been imprisoned in The Tower. Due to crimes of alleged treason, Elliot has been facing months of horrifying torture inside one of England's most feared prisons.

One day, Elliot finds himself with an opportunity to escape his shackles and make a run for it. He must escape his captors, which is easier said than done as The Tower is an extremely dark place. Getting caught not only means that Elliot will have to return to his cell, but will lead to his execution as punishment for his escape attempt.

One interesting feature of The Tower is the addition of permadeath to a horror game. As Elliot, if you manage to get caught by the prison guards, you'll find yourself on the executioner's block, and will have to start over. However, from the information given on the Kickstarter, it seems that you'll be able to turn off the permadeath if you prefer a more straightforward horror game that you can save and continue after you die.

The Tower is a game that relies heavily on the use of stealth. Stay out of sight of the guards in order to avoid being taken back to your cell and eventually executed. Sneaking through dark corridors with little or no light available is both tense and exciting, and lends itself to a very uneasy gaming experience. The tension in the game is extreme, and really does well to create a sense of terror in the player.

Elliot does not have access to any weapons. The Tower plans on creating an advanced and intuitive A.I. system, which means that Elliot must stealth his way around extremely intelligent guards in order to reach the next save point. These guards will react to sounds and movement, so it's important to do your best to stay out of sight.

The Tower has already been Greenlit on Steam, and is currently seeking funding through Kickstarter.
