Cosmophony is hard. Cosmophony is extremely hard. Typically, we think of music-based games as something we can sit down and play as we relax and unwind to the soothing sounds of our favorite music. Cosmophony takes this idea, throws it in the dirt, stomps it out, walks away until it is just out of sight, turns around, walks back, and picks the idea up again. The game is extremely challenging, yet it still manages to provide a satisfying challenge that is both excruciating and entertaining.
Cosmophony features a disclaimer on its Steam page. "This game is designed with more experienced gamers in mind: the difficulty level, while gradual, is still very high." This could not be more true. From the minute I booted up the game, I was faced with an unexpected level of challenge.
An intense experience at its core, Cosmophony places you in control of the heart of a fallen goddess who reside in a dying universe. As the goddess, you are tasked with fulfilling her destiny. To be honest, I don't even see the need for a story in the game. It's fairly abstract, to the point that I had some trouble deciphering exactly what was going on at any given time.
Cosmophony features a very pleasant minimalist style in terms of its visual aesthetic. It's definitely not a gorgeous game, but the visuals are a perfect compliment to the gameplay. If the art was extremely detailed, it would take away from your ability to react quickly to the environment. I feel that because of the simple shapes and colors in the game, your brain is able to process the information quicker, thus causing you to have a quicker reaction to approaching obstacles.
The gameplay is extremely fast-paced. It is almost to the point that your brain won't be able to keep up. On the third level, I found myself struggling to keep up with the pace of the music, as it began to get quicker and quicker as the level progressed. Dodging and weaving your way through the various obstacles is an exciting challenge, and it's so satisfying to smoothly complete a level.
In terms of its soundtrack, Cosmophony features some fantastic drum and bass tracks. The tempo of the songs is a great compliment to the fast-paced, thrilling gameplay. As we all know, in music games, it is extremely important to find tracks that fit the tempo of the game. The importance of choosing the right music cannot be overstated, and I feel like Cosmophony does a great job in this field.
The controls are very simple. You move left, right, and shoot. I like to think of the levels as having a grid, because you move left one "space" each time you press the left arrow key. This means that openings can be multiple "spaces" away from your current position, so spotting and estimating how many "spaces" you need to move is a huge part of the gameplay. Also, you'll often find yourself faced with "enemies" that you must shoot in rhythm with the music. Shooting is accomplished by pressing space or the down arrow key. The game controls really well, and although it is simple to learn, it is still one of the most challenging games I've ever played.
All in all, Cosmophony is a really solid rhythm game, with a tough-as-nails difficulty. If you're the kind of person who loves a challenge, then this is a game for you. Cosmophony will be available on Steam on July 9th.
