On their intergalactic voyage, the Mims - a strange alien race with way too many eyes for my liking - are forced to crash-land on different planets. Your task is to get their new colonies up and running and ultimately rebuild their spaceship, so they can resume their journey. You'll have them constructing new builings, creating a fruit-based economy, as well as researching and breeding new species. The Mims Beginning straddles the line between city builder and god game, so apart from odering your underlings around you can also directly intervene with magi... I mean Psi powers.

Watching your cute aliens go about their business is certainly satisfying, even if the amount of micromanagement required for even simple tasks might not be to everyone's liking. A little more automation would have gone a long way, I reckon. A mid-mission save feature is also notably absent.

Apart from these minor annoyances, there's a lot to like about The Mims Beginning. A lengthy campaign mode introduces all of the game's features one by one, and a sandbox mode let's you build to your heart's content. It's rather impressive that all of this was created by just two people, and if you prefer the game's weird, whimsical style over more serious strategy offerings, you should definitely check it out.

The Mims Beginning is available for $15.99 on Steam. For more information on the game and developer Squatting Penguins, you can head to their website or follow them on Twitter.
