KOTA KINABALU, May 4 ― Police withdrew the outrider escort for Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad as the former prime minister had attended unlawful assemblies, said Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar.
Inspector-General of Police clarified, however, that the security detail for Dr Mahathir was not removed, saying the police would never put the former prime minister’s safety at risk.
“We revoked it because he uses the traffic escort to attend illegal gatherings like the Bersih rally, Anti-GST rally, and collecting signatures for the (Citizens’) Declaration, which are against the law and the Constitution.
“How can we escort him to such events? We cannot support it, so, I decided to revoke it,” he said.
Khalid explained that the revocation was not a complete and permanent denial of traffic escorts for Dr Mahathir, saying their allocation will be decided on an individual basis.
He also warned non-police personnel against providing such escorts for Dr Mahathir, saying they will be prosecuted.
The IGP said members of the public attempting to escort the former prime minister’s vehicle or convoys were not trained to do so, and would pose a danger to themselves and other road users.
Khalid advised the public that they were under no obligation to obey directions from escorts that were not operated by law enforcement officials.
