The Fun & Serious Festival is Europe's largest videogame festival. It celebrates the work done by game developers, directors, artists, and producers in a full program of activities including conferences, lectures and panels, networking sessions, and events for trade members and general visitors. This year, the festival will take place from November 25 to 28 in Bilbao, Spain.
The Fun & Serious Festival actually consists of several events at once. Here's what's going on in Bilbao:
VIT Talks (November 25 & 26): major international influencers for the creative industries will share their perspectives on one main theme: The Future Reality. These talks will touch upon Virtual Reality devices as well as other areas, such as Big Data, Wearables and other new technologies that will be setting trends in the near future. There will be several high-profile guest speakers, with Warren Spector being this year's guest of honor.
Games Industry Forum (November 25 & 26): The Games Industry Forum is both a conference for presentations and panels about business development, publishing, and legal issues, as well as a valuable networking opportunity for developers. The Fun Zone (November 25-27): Spain's biggest eSports event will take place right here. In addition, there is a large exhibition space for all things gaming, AAA and indie games alike. In fact, the Indie Zone is an important part of the Fun Zone. This special exhibition space allows developers and players to chat and, of course, get some hands-on time with interesting games. If you're looking to get a mental map of the Spanish (and international) indie scene, this is the place to be.
The Titanium Award Gala (November 28): this event will round out the festivities. It is held in the Guggenheim Museum and promises to be quite a show. While it won't be accessible for general visitors, it will also be streamed online.
While the festival is open to the general public - 23€ gets you a three-day-pass for the Fun Zone and the Indie Zone - it is obviously of special interest to everyone interested in the art and business of making games. An all-access pass sets you back 30€. If you're an indie developer and want to exhibit your game, a modest fee of 350€ will secure you some space at the Indie Zone. Compared to other gaming events, this is rather inexpensive. According to Antonio Santo, one of the organizers, "the Festival doesn't want to monetize indie devs, it has other means to finance itself -- we really want this to be a useful space and opportunity for indies."
