Wonderful. Stunning. Beautiful. Striking. Charming. All of these words do a good job of conveying just how impressed I am with a game's art or design. They all show that it has floored me, sweeping my off my feet with the artistic power behind them. Yet, when I try to use them to talk about just how good Owlboy looks, or how much fun it is to play, they feel weak. Stunted. They can't carry the weight of the sheer positivity, the raw beauty, and the delightful friendship that this game represents.
Owlboy is all of those things, but few words used to describe it will fully convey all the joy that D-Pad Studio has contained within this incredible game.
Otus, a young, mute owl boy, finds a lot of responsibility unintentionally thrust upon him after the Sky Pirates attack his home town. He's got a proud heritage to uphold as he finds himself adventuring across many different worlds, into varied caverns and dungeons, and high up into the cerulean sky. His ability to fly and lift things will help him solve puzzles and face down his enemies along the way, flitting about while carrying his best buddies (who just happen to be able to provide excellent cover fire) above danger.
And all throughout this adventure, D-Pad Studio does things with pixels that are breathtaking. Every scene is loaded with hidden details and depth, making it hard not to stop and admire every vista, every crevice, and every lost city. Even clothes flapping in the breeze capture the eye with the skill the developers have brought to its art design. It's all so wonderful to look at that it's hard to do anything else but just place yourself somewhere and drink it all in.
Fun puzzles. Excellent combat with unique abilities. Characters that ooze charm with their every movement. Touching story. Beautiful place after beautiful place. Every second of every year that went into Owlboy was well worth it. If you like games at all, this one will make you smile.
Owlboy is available for $24.99 on Steam, GOG, and Humble Bundle. A physical version is also available through IndieBox. For more information on the game and D-Pad Studio, you can head to the game's site, the developer's site, or follow them on Facebook, YouTube, and Twitter.
