Ah yes, good old mechanized mass destruction. If you're partial to hopping into a giant combat vehicle and raining missiles all over futuristic cities that somehow look like 80's movie sets, Brigador might be for you. Take a stroll through fully destructible environments with your mech while enemy units throw everything they've got at you in order to blow you to smithereens. Civilian lives, collateral damage? Who cares, this is the grim future!
I reckon that Brigador will get a lot of love for its amazing retro aesthetics. If this doesn't remind you of old John Carpenter movies, isometric games like Syndicate, and - for whatever ungodly reason - ancient Windows 95 games' user interfaces... then you must be a lot younger than me, that's for sure. Developers Stellar Jockeys call that a "revivalist graphic style [which] reminds you of what 90's games would look like now." Dead right!
The game is really quite tough. It might be tempting to play it as an arena shooter, but everything other than a super-careful tactical approach will get you killed in no time. It's unforgiving, and coming to grips with the controls also takes a while. Truth be told, I bounced right off the first time I played. However, I'm glad that I came back for more, and now I'm ever so slowly completing those campaign missions. There is a freelance mode as well, which lets you customize your play experience and unlock more pilots, vehicles, and weapons with the money you made in previous runs. As an added treat, a five-hour audiobook - the first one on Steam, incidentally - and the soundtrack are available as DLC ($9.99).
Brigador is available for $19.99 directly from the developer, on itch.io, and on Steam. For more information on the game and developer Stellar Jockeys, you can head to their website or follow Jack and Hugh Monahan on Twitter.
