BeautiFun Games, developers of the puzzle platformer Nihilumbra, are tackling the action RPG genre with Megamagic: Wizards of the Neon Age. Join Phoban and his magical sidekick Fum on a fantastical adventure, featuring techmagic, summoned monsters, and more eighties flashbacks than you can shake an original G1 Transformers figure at!
With VHS effects, neon colors galore, and a friendly Saturday-morning cartoon atmosphere, Megamagic is super-cheesy, but after the somber overtones of Nihilumbra, this feels like a breath of fresh air. You can tell that the developers set out to create something fun and over the top, and it looks like they achieved that goal.
The game's real time combat can feel a little hectic. There's lots of frantic clicking involved and ordering your summoned beasts around takes some getting used to. I keep thinking that this would have worked as a turn-based game just as well, maybe even better. In any case, if the combat's not to your liking, you can always play on "narrative" difficulty. Tiny complaints aside, if Megamagic's neon-tinged world looks appealing to you, I fully encourage you to give it a try.
...and hey, come on, trailer-guy saying "MEGAMAGIC: WIZARDS OF THE NEON AGE" like in a bad commercial? That's so rad.
Megamagic is available for $14.99 directly from the developer, on Steam, and GOG. For more information on the game and developer BeautiFun Games, you can head to the game's website or follow them on Twitter.
